Two great semi-final matches. The first saw Dave Rees-Godfrey wearing down his better half, Sarah Creed-Rees-Godfrey in a marathon event. Well done Sarah - great technique but couldn't keep up with Dave's stamina. Meanwhile Dave Davies demonstrated that skill and guile can overcome fitness in a long battle with Alex Rowlands despite the 3-0 scoreline.
The final match promised to be an epic battle between evergreen DD, who has a great history in the tournament, and his teammate Dave Godfrey. Both players appeared fatigued by their semi-final game earlier in the day which meant going in early for the kill shot making for some entertaining sport. With DD having 2 game balls in hand in the third, it looked like the match would move to an epic finale but his slightly younger opponent managed some fantastic retrievals. Dave D was forced to concede due to exhaustion after losing the game to go 2-1 behind and staring into the abyss.
Seven entries in the straight racketball tournament allowed a round robin format over the 3 days so that each player played one 20 minute game against all the other players. The format worked well and allowed a complete ranking of all seven. Congratulations to the skillful Clive Chard who remained unbeaten and finished narrowly ahead of Alex Rowlands who had bravely competed in both events. Well done also to Dave Angove, Rob Upton, and the ladies: Cheryl (Shirley?) Creed, Mekanie Proudlock and Judy Wright for lasting the distance against some fit opposition. The PM (post-match discussion) was held in the nearby Ye Olde Butchers Arms.
Congratulations and a big thank you to the organizer - Oliver Griffiths who had to pull out of the event late in the day due to a (dance-related?) injury but is now back playing - nice one Ollie
