This year we held three events: men’s, ladies event and over 50's. It was a huge success with a big entry; players and spectators saw some long and entertaining matches. David Rees-Godfrey must have completed a marathon on court with majority of matches lasting over an hour.
With only having 4 days to complete the tournament and limited court times available, I thank everyone for having patience and playing; a special well done to those who had to play twice in one day. I’m sure your lungs and legs will recover soon.
A huge thank you for the guys who helped support refereeing the semi- finals and finals, and to those who came and supported the tournament, without you I’m not sure if the players would have put in the effort they did.
Initially had 28 entrants but sadly a few late drop outs because of work and other commitments. Round 1 and 2 took place on Wednesday and Thursday, creating strong Quarter-finals within the plate and main draw on the Friday night. First game in the Quarter finals was Joe Rhys vs Richard Murphy; though Young Joe looked strong playing Gareth Pitt the night before he couldn’t deliver the same performance and was knocked out by the No.1 seed 3-0. Oliver Griffiths vs David Rees-Godfrey also took to court, and everyone expected a tough battle, and what a battle it was, with the game going over 60 mins and both players leaving nothing on court, Dave taking victory 3-1. Frazer Richards Vs Dave Davies next up, Dave having a great run in the masters was sure to cause an upset, but sadly was nursing an injury and couldn’t find the form to compete with an in-form Frazer, losing in straight games. The last quarter final saw Ian Fenner-Evans taking on the last man standing from the C team Alex Powles. Alex started strong taking the first game but couldn’t keep it going and Ian pulled it back taking the win 3-1.
Semi-finals on Saturday morning – Richard M vs David R-G,, Frazer Richards vs Ian Fenner-Evans in the main draw, Richard Wright vs Tim Cadogen & David Rhys vs Charlie Head in the Plate. With early morning blues and a slight delay in play it was Richard Wright and David Rhys who would progress to the Plate final. DRG feeling stiff and with nothing left in the house to eat turned up to face Richard; everyone thought Godfrey would be too stiff and exhausted but proved the doubters wrong and went to battle with Murphy coming out on top after another marathon match winning 3-1 to progress to the final. Frazer again proved himself by knocking out a tough opponent in straight sets winning 3-0, making it DRG vs Frazer in the final.
Plate Final – Richard Wright vs David Rhys, taking to court both being knocked out of the Men’s over 50’s, both wanting to win for more than pride. It was Richard that got the victory 3-0.
The Main Final - David Rees-Godfrey vs Frazer Richards. Both players ready for battle and eager to get on court. Both desperate to win, Godfrey praying for his legs to keep him going & Frazer relying on his form. First game goes to DRG taking just over 15 Minutes 11-7, Frazer hit back with 8-11, with both players giving everything DRG took the third in another thrilling long game 11-9. Each player knowing that any small mistake could cost it. Frazer battling and making Dave work hard, but Frazer just worked him that little bit too much taking the fourth 11-7. Going into the 5th and final game, everyone was getting nervous as the rallies got longer and longer. Due to a technical glitch (Organiser forgetting to book courts meant an interruption in play with no lights) gave the players the extra rest they well needed. With Frazer taking an early 5-2 lead it looked like it could be over, but Dave found whatever energy he had left and brought it back to 5-5. Dave couldn’t keep his momentum and Frazer capitalized to take the final game 11-5 to win 3-2 (7-11 11-8 9-11 11-7 11-5).
Congratulations to a very popular 2018 Club Champion – Frazer Richards
Men’s Over 50’s
A strong 12 man draw meant an exciting challenge for all especially with some players also entering the main draw. Huw Moores, Richard Wright, Tim Dulson, Mark Davies made it to the semi-finals while Steve Walters, Mark Fenwick, John Gooding, Bob Perry battled it out in the plate semi. Mark's fast feet and good court movement in the final of the plate proved decisive in the final when he beat Bob 3-1 (11-7 11-8 10-12 11-5). Huw vs Tim was a repeat of last year's but this time Huw couldn’t match his previous performances. Tim proved the fitter to prevail in the 5th to win 3-2 (11-4 3-11 13-11 9-11 11-3). Huw's consolation was a cold refreshing pint waiting as he left court. Men’s Over 50 Club Champion 2018 – Tim Dulson.
Ladies Club Championship
This event returned following a hiatus in 2017. Bronte Wright showing her dominance throughout but the others didn’t make it too easy for her. She met a fierce Rebecca Baker in the final. Rebecca put up a good fight in the final but couldn't get a game from Bronte (15-13 15-11 15-8). Ladies Club Champion 2018 - Bronte Wright.
Thank you all for playing and good luck in the coming season. Oliver Griffiths, Club Captain.
