Friday 17th July 2015 saw the culmination of what seemed like decades of struggle, to achieve the club's dream in adding a new squash court and upgrading one other. The evening was an amazing success which rounded off over 2 years of practical work which has realised a great transformation at the club. Through funding from Sport Wales, club finance and an amazing individual contribution the club appointed contractors which were all club users to put a brand new international court in and convert the existing court 3 to a glass back facility. LED lighting was installed on both courts and a very impressive seating area was constructed to seat over 160 people across the 2 courts.
The night was special. Guests from across the recreation club joined members and non members who made the effort to join us and were treated to a spectacle! First off were the speeches: conducted by master of ceremonies Matt O Connor and finished off with a few lines and jokes from committee member Richard Murphy. First on were 2 club members who had won the raffle to be the first people to play a match on court.
International referee Huw Moores conducted the proceedings and there was great banter during the best of one game. Then on to the main exhibition match. Peter Creed 6 x times Welsh champion against world number 15 Daryl Selby. Breath-taking rallies and the odd treble bounce ensued but the crowd were treated to something special as both players were bent over exhausted at the end of the best of 3 games. Fantastic squash.
There was an exhibition racketball game with 2 lady club members and a young v old match between 2 club members at the opposite end of the age spectrum. “Old” won 3-2!! A bar and buffet were onsite to help the evening along.
Rhiwbina was pleased to welcome Made in Cardiff who filmed the event as well as Terry Phillips from Wales Online and representatives form Disability Sport Wales. All were most welcome.
The club is very grateful to all who have been involved during the past years in facilitating this build. Notably Sport Wales, Wales Squash and Racket ball for their continued support and to committee members Robert Upton, Adrian Creed, Richard Plenty and Bob Perry. To these people the club holds a huge debt.
If you would like to visit the club to try out the new courts please come along, you will be most welcome
