Masters Home Internationals

Dave Davies  Richard Murphy

Congratulations to Dave Davies and Richard Murphy who have been selected to
represent Wales in the over 40s and over 45s  teams in this years Home Internationals.

Special Mention For Fiona Murphy
At Under 18’S Test Matches

Wales came second over the weekend and performed admirably. All players competed well and
special mention must go to Fiona who was undefeated over the weekend beating the English
champion and English number 1 over the course of the weekend. Each player gave a 100 per
cent and was a credit to their country.  Fiona has since been selected for the ladies international squad.

 Handicap Tournament 2010

This years Handicap Tournament was very well supported with 40 entrants who entered over the festive period.  It was the most players we have had for 20 years.  The age range for this years tournament was also ground breaking with the youngest player Joe Rhys-Curtis reaching the semi final of the plate beating his father Dave on route.  I don t know which one of them was happier, Joe for beating his Dad or Dave, so proud of Joe's performance.

The Semi finals produced some classic hard fought games and a special mention must be given to Dewi Thomas who played  out of his skin forcing Chris Powell to dig deep and bring all of his coaching knowledge to the fore to stay in front. The match went on for a gut wrenching 2 1/2 hours! Well played to both of them!

The finals were played on Sat 8th Jan.  With a packed balcony the Plate Final started at 1700hrs.

The Balcony

This final was played between Mark Durbridge and Martin Vicary

Plate Finalists                Mark and Martin in Plate final

The Plate final was a well fought match that went to 5 games.  Martin was handicapped 6 points behind Mark and worked hard taking the two games he won.  Mark showed his skill and ability to play winners throughout the match and this proved to much for Martin over the 5 games.  Mark eventually won 3-2.

What you looking at!             The Plate Winner Mark Durbridge

The main final was between Chris Powell (still recovering from his marathon with Dewi) and Simon Kilshaw.

Chris and Simon           The main final

The match started with both players playing a tight game with Simon having a 6 point advantage over Chris with the handicap applied.  Chris kept his focus throughout the first two games and surged into a 2 - 0 lead.  Simon seamed to focus on the task in hand at the start of the third game and started to force the game and increase the pace. Chris also had to step up to match Simon's pace and early on in the third game Chris seemed to pull up!  Simon took advantage and after a long third game he  won to bring it back to 2 - 1.  At the start of the fourth game Simon realised that he was now in the driving seat and he attacked from the start winning the next game with ease.  The final game was a well fought game with Chris showing some great resilience to continue even though he was obviously not playing to his potential however Simon demonstrated his true sporting spirit by forcing the pace of the game to remain in control without inflicting any further pain on his opponent.  Simon was a worthy winner eventually taking the match 3-2.

Main event runner up          the winner          Main event winner

As usual the presentation was carried out in the lounge bar with a well earned curry consumed by both players and spectators alike.  A special mention and a vote of thanks must go to the committee (Graham Douglas for his donations) for a very successful tournament that was well supported by the squash members and bodes well for the future.

The New Season is Underway

All the clubs teams are now playing their first matches of the season and information on all the Team Rankings and home matches can be found on the Team News page.

Rhiwbina Club Number 1 plays vital part in GB Clinching Gold in World University Team Championships

Great Britain reclaimed the team title in the 7th World University Squash Championships in Australia – but the favourites were taken the full distance by final newcomers Hong Kong at Monash University in Melbourne.

The second seeds claimed the early advantage when, in a rematch of the women’s individual final, the highly-fancied Annie Au defeated GB’s Emma Chorley again in straight games.  Au, a student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is ranked 16 in the world and the highest-ranked player in the event. The 21-year-old despatched Chorley, a 22-year-old from Bridgwater College in Somerset ranked almost 150 places lower, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 to raise Hong Kong’s hopes for the title.

It was the men’s individual champion Joel Hinds who levelled the tie for Great Britain. The 23-year-old Birmingham University graduate, fought back from 2/1 down to beat Annie Au’s younger brother Leo Au 11-7, 10-12, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6.  “It was a spectacular five set match in which Leo Au fended off two match points before Joel coolly claimed victory,” explained tournament spokesman Sarah Wordsworth.

In the dramatic decider, Welshman Peter Creed – from the University of Wales in Cardiff – sealed victory for Great Britain after beating Hong Kong’s Chiu Ho Fai 11-5, 11-1, 11-4.  The 2/1 win marked Great Britain’s third title triumph in the event after beating France in the finals of both the inaugural championship in 1996 and the 2006 championship in Hungary.  But it was a notable performance by Hong Kong in only their third appearance in the championships after their previous best finish of fifth in 2000.

Squash: Wales out to hit the heights

RHIWBINA’S Sam Fenwick is among four Welsh squash players preparing to face altitude problems virtually TWICE as tough as those being endured by Fabio Capello’s England.

While captain Steven Gerrard and his team-mates get to grips with their World Cup soccer challenge at altitudes up to 1,600m, Fenwick and Co are training flat out for a World Championship challenge at around 3,000m in South America.

Australian former world No 2 Chris Robertson is the Wales team coach for their World Under-19 Championship campaign in Quito, Ecuador, from July 27 until August 1.

Newport pair David Haley and Sam Huxtable join Nyall Driscoll (Cardiff SRC) and Fenwick in the Wales under-19 team and Robertson says: “We are all going into the unknown – it’s almost impossible to know how our players will cope.

“We have been using altitude tents, but nothing can really prepare us for the conditions. I played in Johannesburg during my career, but the altitude in Ecuador is far more.

“Other teams, like Germany, are spending a lot of time and money acclimatising, but we don’t have the finances to do that. We go out five days before the start of the tournament. We can’t say how things will go because this is not simply a squash issue. Altitude affects difference people in different ways.

“It can make you feel as though the world is on your shoulders – and it can make things worse if you try to push too hard through that. My concern is that nobody falls ill because they push too hard. I have to remember these are 17 and 18-year-olds.

“Overall, if we can finish in the top 16 and get near the top 10 we will feel it was a successful trip. The players involved have been in the Squash Wales development programme for a long time now and the trip will help them all gain experience and progress further.

“This group earned the European Championships silver medal for Wales, although that was a mixed team which included Tesni Evans from North Wales. It will be tough in Ecuador for purely squash reasons with Egypt, England, Pakistan, Australia and more presenting a formidable challenge.

“The altitude adds an extra test and we will do everything possible to deal with that.”

Creed is out to be on top of the World with GB

RHIWBINA Squash Club’s Peter Creed is flying out to Australia next month in search of World Championship success.

Creed, a student at Cardiff’s University of Wales Institute is in the Great Britain team for the World University Championships in Melbourne starting on Saturday, July 10.

Caerphilly-based Creed is the only Welshman in the five-player GB squad, who fly out a week before the Championships start and spend three days in Kuala Lumpur en-route.

“We should be seeded at number three, maybe even two, with Egypt and Australia our main rivals,” said Creed.

Welsh senior champion Creed, aged 23 and a former pupil at St Martins School, in Caerphilly, is currently ranked 140 in the world.

“I’ve jumped 85 places since last January when I was at 225,” says Creed.

“My next target is to get into the top 100. If I can achieve that by this time next year I will feel I am making solid progress.”

Creed started playing at Caerphilly SRC when he was 10-years-old, while he has been playing at Rhiwbina in Cardiff for the last two season.

He moved when team squash ended at Caerphilly Leisure Centre and the local club switched, almost en-bloc, to Rhiwbina.

Creed went to St Martins School, but was then snapped up by the Jonah Barrington Squash Academy at Millfield School in Somerset.

“I was there for four years,” said Creed. “Three of the other players in the GB team – Joel Hinds and Emma Chorley – also attended the Barrington Academy.”

Creed plays for Rhiwbina in the South Wales Premier, while he also Avon League squash and is also in the Newport SRC squad for the National Premier Squash League.

Newport entered the PSL last season and have re-entered for next season.

The World University Championships are held over nine days. An individual event will be run over the first four days followed by the team championships.

Creed will then be staying on for a further month.

“There are three tournaments I have entered in Australia to work on improving my world ranking,” said Creed.

BBQ and Fun Day

On 19 June the club had a BBQ and Fun day to raise some funds to assist Peter Creed and Sam Fenwick in their representative matches for GB and Wales this summer.

Over the usual couple of post match beers on a Sunday night, an idea was turned into a plan and all that was left to do was to sort out the details.  A willing group of club members got together a couple of days later and thrashed out some great ideas , and finally came up with the format for the day.  We only had 10 days before the event so once all the volunteers had accepted their individual tasks, it was time to get on, advertise and prepare.

BBQ, Raffle, Auction, Table Tennis Challenge, Name the Monkey, Stocks, Football Target, Sweet Stall, Treasure Hunt, Chess Challenge, Guess the amount of Squash Balls and retire to the bar was the format of the day.  An early start for those who watched Wales v The all Blacks at 0800hrs but it was also a good excuse to fire up the BBQ in preparation for the day (thanks Steve and Harry).  After a few last minute problems to sort out, the venue was set up and all that was needed were the club members and guests to arrive.  Richard plenty had struck a great deal with a former club member Lee Adams of "Tasty Tucker" a
nd had arrived with the mountain of food for the BBQ, the Michelin Chef arrived in good time (he looked remarkably like Chris Powell) and the festivities began.

The day was going well and the arrival of the two players who the whole event was in aide of, spurred on all the volunteers who were busy raising funds for their cause.  Huw had taken the plunge (literally) and was first to enter the stocks much to the delight of the waiting youngsters.  Others then felt the need to receive a soaking from whoever would pay for the pleasure.  A special thanks should go to Bob Perry who managed to create a cue equal to the boxing day Next cue in Queens St Cardiff when he went into the stocks.

Dewi had set up a Football challenge in one of the courts in the traditional fashion of kicking the ball through the hole.  When he initially set up, Huw and Paul Foode went to see how it would work.  Paul said to Huw that it was quite easy and we should charge an amount appropriate to the challenge.  Huw did not agree and thought that the challenge was very difficult and we should reward anyone who managed to kick the ball through the whole accordingly.  Foody then picked the ball up, place it on the spot and kicked the ball straight through the whole without touching the sides.  Dewi and Huw were standing in stunned silence!!  Dewi later told Huw that it was another 4 hours before anyone kicked it through and only two managed it all day.

The day carried on with Colyn Thomas continuing to sell raffle tickets Becci organizing all the youngsters into team games and Chris Powell and Richard Plenty continuously cooking away, selling the mountain of food we had for all to eat.  Various other people entered the stocks throughout the rest of the day and the Creed family had such fun, I think they have had a word with Bob Perry to loan the stocks on a permanent basis.

Fundraiser
The Members and guests

We all retired to the bar for the raffle and auction at 1800hrs.  The raffle was very well represented and stocked with donated prizes. Thanks to Colyns relentless selling techniques throughout the day, it raised a large amount of money.

The auction was then carried out by Mike Workman of Squash Wales, who with his usual style and flair managed to squeeze as much out of the audience for each lot.
A great big thanks must go to all those who bid and especially those who placed the winning bid on each of the lots.  The auction raised a magnificent £700.

After the auction the Chairman, Mr Paul Foode made a speech and announced that through all the efforts of the day, we had managed to raise £1200.

The evening continued in good fashion with most of the members and guests staying in the bar and carrying on the festivities.  Chris and Richard were still cooking and by this stage there was a two way tie for the most burgers consumed in one day, both Dewi and Steve Thomas were 1 away from double figures.

A huge thank you must go to those who hatched the original plan and put the wheels in motion to ensure the day went ahead, the result speaks for itself!

Thank You

Foody, Rich Plenty, Huw, Chris Powell, Bob Perry, Dewi & Becci, Adrian and Cheryl Creed, Steve Thomas, Jane, Colyn and Mike Workman.

Tasty Tucker the BBQ sponsors can be contacted on 07930820480
for all your catering needs. Without the donation from Lee Adams of Tasty Tucker the BBQ would not of been such a success.

2010 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

On 15 May the finals of the Club Championships were played.  As usual this was the culmination of the previous two weeks of matches which were played by the majority of club members.  The categories were:

The Open (open to all club members)
Mens over 45
Ladies (to be completed soon)
The over 45s Plate winner
Richard Manners

The Open and over 45s also had a plate competition which also played through to a final.  The first result was actually the over 45s Plate Final which was played on the Thu evening and resulted in
Richard Manners beating Graham Douglas 3 - 0

The Open Plate final was the first time in years that the players were both under 30 years of age. A real exiting prospect for the club and a reflection on the current junior coaching program in place managed by the Head Coach Bob Perry.
The Plate finalists
Oliver and Ralph

The Plate Winner
Oliver Griffiths

Oliver Griffiths played Ralph Pompeous (Welsh under
15 squad player) and although it was a well fought match, Oliver proved to strong for Ralph.  Ralph was congratulated by numerous players as a result of his great maturity and performances throughout this tournament.

The mens over 45 Final was played between two of the stalwarts of the club Paul Hounsil and Dave Rhys.  After many hours of stretching, application of creams and potions and general discussions about how many injuries they had between them, the two players started.

Over 45s Finalists
Dave and Paul
Over 45 Winner
Paul Hounsil

Paul began with his usual pace and chased down every shot that Dave could pull out of his bag of tricks
(he has a few), this eventually took its toll and although Dave put up a gallant effort, Paul's pace around the court and his fitness won through on the day.  He eventually won 3 - 0.

The Open Final was an eagerly awaited match between the current Welsh Champion, Peter Creed and Sam Fenwick who had recently been selected to represent Wales in the World Team Championships in Ecuador  Those club members who had been supporting the Premiership Team throughout this season had witnessed some outstanding matches involving the two players and to watch them playing a competitive match against each other was a real treat for all present.  The match started at the usual pace of these two outstanding players and Sam was showing his ability to compete with Peter in the initial stages.  There were some long hard fought rallies with Peter constantly moving Sam around the court and playing a tight game.  This game of attrition from Peter took its toll on Sam as he was constantly under pressure to try and gain control of the rallies, Peter eventually took the first game 9 - 1.  Sam started the second game intent on gaining control and after a couple of strong rallies forcing the errors from Peter, he took a 2 - 1 lead.  Peter then upped his game a couple a notches and took complete control of the match and won the next 17 points winning the second game 9 - 2 and eventually the third 9 - 0.  Sam fought long and hard to the end and should be commended on his amazing ability to retrieve some of the shots Peter played.  Thanks go to both players for an outstanding exhibition of squash for those club members who witnessed the Final.

A FANTASTIC RESULT FOR RHIWBINA NUMBER 1

Peter Creed

PETER CREED COMES OF AGE AND IS THE WELSH NATIONAL
CHAMPION 2010

Peter Creed, aged 22, Rhiwbina number 1, who is a

product of the successful Squash Wales Junior Development
Structure, won his first Welsh Closed Mens A title at the prestigious
Welsh Closed Championships which was held at the new “home” of
Squash Wales, the Welsh Institute of Sport over the period 19 - 21 February 2010.
Alex Gough, former Wales number 1, who has retired from the
professional squash circuit to become Chief Executive Officer for the
Professional Squash Association, came out of retirement to support
the event that he has won so many times in previous years. Alex
has not lost any of his skill and beat Welsh International Jethro
Binns, Strings, aged 25, three games to love in the semi-final.
Peter had a really grueling semi-final against fellow Welsh
International Nic Birt, which went right down to the wire. Peter
winning 11-3, 16-18, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, after over 70 minutes of
very entertaining squash on a Saturday night where the crowd
stayed late to watch the enthralling encounter between two Welsh
team mates.
The final on Sunday afternoon was again played before a great
crowd of people who appreciated the required skill, fitness and
tactical awareness necessary to be able to compete at the elite level
of our great sport.
The crowd were wondering whether Peter had recovered from his
more demanding semi. The answer was “yes”. Peter has been
working on many aspects of his game, his fitness has improved and
competing on the circuit this season has boosted his confidence.
Alex competed for every shot in every rally, but his stamina was left
wanting, not a surprise as he is no longer playing full time. Peter
won 3-0.
Peter was gracious in victory and referred to the fact that Alex is no
longer at his peak and that the multi-titled, multi-capped David
Evans had withdrawn from the draw due to injury, but he would
take “the win”. Peter also thanked his parents for supporting him
throughout his career and Squash Wales for organising such a
fantastic tournament.

EASTER DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The Easter Doubles Tournament took place on Sat 3 April 2010. We had a turnout of 16 players and it was great to see representation from all standards from the club,
1 junior (Joe Rhys)
3 ladies (Sarah and Cheryl Creed and Linda Griffiths)
2 of the Premier Team (Matt and Ross)
1 Pensioner (The Chairman)
1 Doubles Virgin (Steve Walters)
and the remainder made up of players of various standards.

Once the teams were drawn out of the hat (seeded player with a non seeded player) the format was two leagues of four teams all pairs to play each other.  There were some well fought games and in particular, Joe and Dave Rhys had some hard matches and played with great enthusiasm and skill.  Paul Foode commented on Joe showing no signs of pressure when up against one of the top jockeys by hitting some great cross court nicks against Matt.

A special mention must go to Linda and Cheryl who reluctantly signed up to play, but did so throughout the day with some great squash.  At one stage when they were playing against each other with their partners Matt and Ross, they ended up planning their next shopping trip whilst Matt and Ross had a 60 shot rally on their side of the court.

Once all the games in the leagues were complete the winners and runners up from each league played through to reach an overall winner.  The final was played between Oliver Griffiths and Sarah Creed against Huw Moores and Adrian Creed (recently back from retirement).  It was a well matched game proving that old age and cunning can eventual overcome youth and enthusiasm and the eventual winners were Huw and Adrian 3 - 1.

We all retired to the bar for some well earned refreshments and reminded each other of the Tournament Rule Number 2

"We are here to have fun"

Congratulations to the Premier Team

Great first Season as Rhiwbina CSC

Peter

So Close but Yet So Far….

As the Men’s Premier season draws to an end the Rhiwbina CSC side have finished their debut season at the club in second place.  This is the highest league finish to date for the team that moved from Caerphilly Squash Club last summer.

After losing to Newport ‘A’ at home on the first game of the season, the home venue at Rhiwbina has become something of a fortress with the side remaining undefeated there for the rest of the season, only another three matches were lost over the rest of the season which achieved a record of 10 wins and 4 losses.

This season has welcomed premier squash back to Rhiwbina after many years out of the league with the team providing the club with squash of the highest level, supporting that has been a tremendous crowd who have turned up to cheer the team on at every home match.  Rhiwbina veteran Dave Davies has been called upon to play on 6 occasions winning 5 of those matches which contributed hugely to the success of the season.  The season has also seen Peter Creed establish himself as one of the very best players in Wales capping the season off by becoming the Welsh National Champion for the first time.  Unfortunately his rise on the professional circuit has seen him missing more matches due to tournaments but our 17 year old English import Nathan Lake has attempted to fill the void and delivered a memorable performance coming from 2-0 to beat Greg Tippings 3-2 in the deciding rubber when Rhiwbina overturned the home defeat by beating Newport in the return fixture.

Sam Fenwick had another good season moving above Matthew O’Connor in the team rankings who continues to try and work his way out of the side and into retirement.  Ross Jenner fuelled by Carling Black Label and Richard Murphy who has been crowned the Welsh Over 45’s National Champion put in their usual steady performances we have come to expect which have been invaluable to the team.

With the Premier Cup still to play for hopefully we will see some silverware coming to the club before the season ends and we look forward to the quest for our first league title in 2010/2011 season

THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE THAT HAVE SUPPORTED US OVER THE SEASON, WE HOPE IT HAS BEEN ENJOYABLE
