Wonderful Welsh Masters at Rhiwbina

February 3rd saw the club host its first Welsh Masters closed tournament; in essence the Welsh championships, with selections up for grabs for the upcoming Home International series. This was the first major tournament the club has held since the new developments were completed at our venue some 18 months ago.  Over 110 entrants participated over the weekend and the event was a massive success both for us as club and also for Wales Squash.

Tony Smith collects his Runner Up Award in the O 55 Event

Rhiwbina players featured heavily in most of the draws and some outstanding performances saw the seeds tumble. In the O 55 event both Dave Chan and Tony Smith took out the number 2 and 3 seeds in the early rounds, ending up playing each other in the semi-final. Tony came out on top and his progress into the final ensured his automatic selection for the Welsh 0 55 Home International team. A great achievement.

Rich Murphy-Proud Winner of the O 50 Event yet again

Richard Murphy won the men’s O 50 title, beating fellow Rhiwbina player and good friend Ian Fenner-Evans in a tough and close semi-final before beating long-time rival Gary Hales from Hampshire in the final.

Pete Kerry collecting his Runner Up award in the O 70 event

Congratulations to Pete Kerry who was runner up in the men’s O 70 event, again securing his Welsh International place. Well done Pete.

Thanks to committee members Adrian Creed and Dave Rhys for helping the event run smoothly with “operational issues” which always occur and to Mark Fenwick who saved the day by dashing to Morrison’s to secure much needed supplies for the W/C Room !!! We could not figure out if it was a severe case of Delhi Belly /Montezuma’s revenge or just sheer theft of the loo rolls that was going on.

Mike Workman in his closing speech said that his team had never been made to feel more welcome at an event and that the feedback that both he and the club had had from players all around the country was that the courts were superb and that the viewing area was the best that they had seen in Wales and comparable with many venues in England.

A great weekend and on now to the PSA EVENT.
